We did it! After receiving a generous donation of 4 lovely dogwood trees we planted the trees in our new woods area! The kids had a blast and can't wait to visit them over the years. Thanks to Holt Community Foundation and to our 2019 seniors! Help us name the new area by filling out the survey.

Intro to Engineering and Design: Kids designed an assembly line for constructing boxes for the Automata. We played a little music and quickly made 14 standard size boxes. Today kids were able to start working on the rest of the project. We will post an update with the finished Automata!
This year a new cohort of engineering kids are starting their 3 year journey! Students will use the design process as a way of problem solving. Intro to Engineering and Design students have spent unit one working through the design process. One product innovation project had kids do a redesign of a cup. They will start using Autodesk inventor a bit in unit 2 and then for the rest of the school year. Our year 3 students are in the midst of identifying problems for their legacy projects. Today was such a fantastic day I had to write a thank you note to Dart Container. The laptop cart arrived so we were able to do all of our work at lap tables. I printed nothing because I knew students could access all of their materials using the laptops. Each student has a laptop available if needed. Today we only used 2 per group so that one had a reference page and another had building instructions. A third will be used as a programming computer (or at times they can all code an take turns hooking up their code to the test bed). The kids all remarked at the high quality of the new laptops. Big smiles and big learning all day. It was a day when they didn't really want to leave the room and I am so thankful.
This year we have added google classroom as a way to communicate with students and turn in assignments. That means there are not very many posts here on the blog. This video game came up in conversation today so I wanted to share it with kids!
Also, this might be a good time to put out a reminder that we have 2 due dates coming up. By Friday students should turn in their bridge project summary on Google Classroom. By Monday students will turn in their Engineering Notebooks and take a quiz on the last part of Unit 2. That means Tuesday we start programming! So far this year we have been working on simple machines. This week we used everything from the first month to build complex machines. Then each group calculated the mechanical advantage of their machine. It was by far our best day all year and kids seemed to really enjoy the challenge of performing tasks using the vex robotics parts.
